“Happy Evaster!” No, that’s not a typo -- this year Easter happens to fall on one of our favorite hippo’s 52nd birthday. That’s right, Eva is turning 52!
Eva has lived at Busch Gardens since 1969 and is one of the oldest animals in the park. She calls the Edge of Africa home, where she was one of the first hippos to test our beautiful hippo habitat pool when it opened in 1997. Sixteen years later, Eva can be found spending her days in the same pool with our youngest hippo, Kita. The two have a wonderful relationship and we think that Kita’s playful energy helps keep Eva young!
Although the saying may go “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”, the same cannot be said of hippos. Eva’s trainers are always challenging her with new behaviors and she seems to enjoy the stimulation. She might move a little bit slower than the others, but the old girl has still got it! The trainers have plenty of surprises in store for these two ladies in honor of “Evaster.” Eva has always loved melons of all kinds so she will be getting plenty of those, along with several other enrichment items including; Gatorade fruit filled popsicles, Jell-O gigglers, specially made hippo Easter cookies, and her very own cake!
Eva will be celebrating with Kita on March 31st at 11am in the Edge of Africa. Don’t be surprised if you see a few lemurs, who share the habitat, crashing the party. Come join us for all the fun!
