How to Make “Brains” Cupcakes: A Zombie-Inspired Recipe

BRAAIIIINNNSSS…. Hungry?

No joke that zombies are hot right now, so get to Howl-O-Scream before Oct. 29 to get your fix. In the meantime, being the zombie aficionado that you are, you’re probably thinking “How can I bring a little zombie magic home to make my Halloween party even more awesome?”

One word: Brains. OK, two words: Brain Cupcakes.

This recipe is so easy, a zombie could do it!

For this creepily sweet treat, first you’ll need to get a brain mold.

Brain Mold...even just saying it is fun!

Our creepy cupcake cooks used one from Wilton, but you can find them at party stores or use some Google magic, too. And then it’s time to get bakin’.

Brain Cupcakes Recipe:

RED VELVET CAKE (makes 18-20 cupcakes)

Step One: Mix together the following ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable or canola oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 oz red food coloring

Step Two: In a separate bowl, sift together

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp cocoa (dark chocolate cocoa is best)

Step Three: Pour dry ingredients into wet ingredients and mix well. Pour into cupcake pans lined with paper cupcake cups

Step Four: Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes (if using a convection oven, set the temperature at 295 degrees). Turn and bake for an additional 13-14 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean

CREAM CHEESE FROSTING:

  • 1 stick unsalted butter
  • 6 oz softened cream cheese
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 cups powdered sugar

Step Five: Beat butter and cream cheese until smooth

Step Six: Add vanilla

Step Seven: Add sugar (little by little) until it reaches a stiff consistency

BRAINS:

Step Eight: Melt the following ingredients together in the microwave and mix until you get a pale brainy tan color

  • 1 bag of white chocolate melting chips
  • 13 pink chocolate melting chips
  • 8 orange chocolate melting chips
  • 1 tbsp mini dark chocolate chips

OOZY CRANIAL FLUID:

Step Nine: Combine 1 cup raspberry syrup and cup strawberry preserves in a squeeze bottle (a well-rinsed mustard bottle works great!)

Step Ten: After cupcakes have cooled, frost with a knife or pastry bag, apply brains and surround brain with oozy cranial fluid.

Step Eleven: Invite over friends with a spooky sense of humor and serve. BRAINS APPETITE!
