Hatching Hornbill Babies

Busch Gardens Tampa has two new residents: baby Southern Ground Hornbills, which were hatched on Feb. 15 and Feb. 19.

Southern Ground Hornbills are the largest of all hornbills, and the two new males are growing rapidly.

Animal Ambassador Spotlight: “Tufts” the Southern Ground Hornbill

Tufts is a Southern Ground Hornbill and was born May, 9 2009 here at Busch Gardens. When I first saw him I’ll be honest I didnt think he was the cutest baby bird, but as the saying goes, he became a face only a father would love. Ever since that day, a day doesn’t go by when I can’t wait to go visit him at his habitat and interact with him.

Tucked into Walkabout Way is a special little aviary called the Kookaburra’s Nest.

I always liked watching the birds in the Kookaburra's Nest. There are so many different animals and behaviors to see. There was only one problem: I didn't know what the names of the species I saw were, which made it nearly impossible for me to learn more about them.

As we give it up to Dad this weekend for all the stuff we’ve put him through, let’s remember another “dad” whose devotion to child-rearing is as singularly focused as our own.

Flamingos are one of a handful of species in the animal kingdom that equally share child-rearing duties between the male and female.
