February 16 is National Hippo Day and big celebrations are in order at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay for our hippo friends!
Hippos are large African mammals that live in social groups called “bloats”. These vegetarians spend an average of 16 hours a day in lakes and rivers to keep their enormous bodies cool in the hot African sun.
Currently listed as a vulnerable species, hippos are often hunted for their meat and ivory tusks. The SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Conservation Fund supports the Uganda Conservation Foundation, which has developed ways for rangers to monitor the waterways for potential poachers and wildlife traffickers.
If you love hippos as much as we do, join us February 18th from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Edge of Africa hippo habitat to celebrate these amazing animals. All you need to do is be there, and we will take care of the rest:
- Hippo-themed trivia games and hands-on activities
- Hippo training session with Moyo the hippo
- Animal Care Specialist talks throughout the day
- Hippo feeding with frozen treats
Most importantly, learn how you can help by spreading awareness about hippos to your friends and family. Every visit to Busch Gardens matters as we consistently fund and support initiatives like the Uganda Conservation Fund and others throughout the world.
